Benjamin Senior’s works are nuanced by everyday observations, yet amplify the numeric and geometric nature of our everyday perception. They capture people at rest and play, distilling dynamic movements into serene, quasi-classical scenes. Senior’s tranquil depictions of the habits of health— here, in the setting of a Pilates studio— are based on observational drawing rather than photography. This approach allows for a dreamy vision in which the patterns and geometries of everyday life are foregrounded, from the contours of the body in motion, to the swirling forms of interior design. The title Ball Games alludes to the rhythmic pace of the Pilates students: peaceful yet energetic, much like Senior’s work.

Together with Sir Nicholas Serota and Tracey Emin we invited 10 international artists to make a print which reflected broadly on the theme of childhood. As always, it’s a fascinating and exciting process developing a series of prints and seeing how different artists respond to the brief.
There has also been the added pleasure of producing the majority of the prints in our new print studio in Margate which has allowed us to give extra time and attention to creating them. The outcome of this is that we have been able to produce a truly exceptional portfolio of work.
We are proud to be involved with Save the Children. We will be donating 1/3 of the profits from sale of the prints to the charity which provide vital support for the incredibly important work that they carry our with vulnerable children around the world.
With paintings that combine serenity and energy, Benjamin Senior is a rising star of Britain’s figurative painting scene. Focusing primarily on the female form, Senior explores the actions of sports and leisure. Patterns and graphic shapes are foregrounded in Senior’s subtly flattened spaces, inspired as much by contemporary life as by the Renaissance and twentieth-century Modernism. Senior works in the ancient medium of egg tempera: hand-mixing egg yolks with coloured pigments in his studio, in time-honoured fashion, to create a fast-drying emulsion. This thin tempera paint allows Senior to create his luminous, light-filled scenes of rest and play.
