We are thrilled to announce our first collaboration with Salman Toor, the celebrated Pakistan-raised and New York-based artist who draws from an imaginary land that's fuelled by the past.
Known for his small-scale figurative works that combine academic technique and a quick, sketch-like style, Toor offers intimate views into the imagined lives of young, queer Brown men residing between New York City and South Asia. Recurring colour palettes and references to art history heighten the emotional impact of Toor’s paintings and add a fantastical element to his narratives drawn from lived experience.
Citizens with Flags (2025) - a ten colour lithographic print - addresses nationality, residency, and the complexities of adjusting to a new culture. It relates to an ongoing series of works by Toor depicting queer Brown men navigating the immigration system. Here the two men hold small flags, a typical gift given to new citizens who pass the test.
Salman Toor, based in New York, has emerged as one of the most exciting voices in contemporary art. His work is deeply influenced by his experiences as a queer Pakistani man, merging Western art traditions with his cultural heritage. Salman’s paintings reflect moments of quiet introspection, often featuring intimate, powerful narratives set within the context of his own identity and the world around him.
Toor was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1983 and currently lives and works in New York. He studied painting and drawing at Ohio Wesleyan University and received his MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. His work was on view in the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Salman Toor: No Ordinary Love, a solo exhibition of the artist’s work organized by and originally presented at the Baltimore Museum of Art, MD in 2022, and accompanied by a catalogue, later traveled to the Tampa Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA (2023-2024). A major solo presentation of Toor’s work was also presented at M WOODS in Beijing in 2023; in association with the project, the Art Gallery of Western Australia produced a publication (Fall 2024).
